Cover for 1996 edition of Five
Five was our first foray into the world of self-publishing with the help of a grant from Yorkshire and Humberside Arts, as it then was. The group compromised of members from Sheffield University writers group. Sadly Tom Roder, an exceptionally fine writer, died not longer after the collection was published. There is now a website featuring Tom Roder's poetry which is well worth visiting. Go to www.tomroder.org.uk
'Geese' is a poem from my section of the anthology:

Geese

Bending geese built a bridge from dusk to sleep;
their coughs, carrying frost, also stirred me
at two a.m. In shirt and jeans to keep
a taste of warmth, I felt hesitantly

downstairs, disarmed the door, and slipped bare-foot
through prickly grass, knee-deep in nets of mist.
I knew, with slender breath-plants taking root,
the lake would soon crush me in its cold fist –

to kick against the chill before the world
turned round, and blue ice bit the water's lip.
And more: submerged as long as I could hold
out air, I pulled down like a lissom rip

unstitching and stitching the water's thread,
to force the depths of what was possible.
I landed dizzy and pushed off the bed
a light dreaming bird. A heavy bubble.
